Strutting 4 Starvation is dedicated to the needs of our disadvantaged kids.
WHO?Strutting 4 Starvation targets the entire population demographic of children 18 and younger who are hungry and not properly nourished in their home community.
WHAT?The issue at hand is combating hunger rates within youth in localized communities. 1 in every 4 children in our pilot community go hungry and are unaware of where their next meal will come from. Without proper nutrition and the right amount of food for their bodies, children cannot function effectively in schools, social situations, or in the domestic household, and struggle with issues such as poverty, violence, and abuse. Without future intervention, children will continue to struggle through adolescence and into adulthood, possibly with permanent physical and emotional damage, with the most severe consequence being a lack of life due to noninterventionist policies. Another important topic is the security of meals during the summer and holiday breaks, due to the fact many kids rely on reduced – price or free lunch meals supplied by schools.

WHEN?Childhood hunger has arisen throughout civilization due to socioeconomic and behavioral reasons including large wealth gaps, lack of efficient unemployment and welfare practices, and prejudicial discrimination. In “Food Hardship in America 2010: Households with and without Children,” our pilot, the Winston – Salem metro area, was ranked as the most difficult area in the United States in terms of placing food on children’s tables. Steps taken to prevent the problem nationwide have included the launching of the Food Stamps program, welfare measures, and non – governmental soup kitchens and food pantries run by local charities and parishes, however lack of local action has allowed the issue to progress to a macroscopic size.
WHERE?Our beginning focus is in the metro area of Winston – Salem, North Carolina, including Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, and Yadkin counties. Within this metro area, the focus will be centered on children aged up to 18 years old, in conjunction with a local food bank.

WHY?Multiple sociological theories have been proposed as to the cause of hunger in the United States, however unemployment, poverty, overpopulation, and substance abuse remain to be the most prominent predisposed factors in child hunger. Some outlying statistics that factor into our personal mission include the following...
· 16.2 million kids in the United States don’t have consistent access to food in their household. · 22% of children live in poverty, meaning 1 in 5 kids are not aware of where their next meal will come from. · Approximately 35% of kids in Winston – Salem, North Carolina are food deficient, amounting to approximately 300,000 people. · 36.1% of food pantries in North Carolina must turn people away due to lack of food supplies. · 60% of eastern North Carolina participates in food support programs. |
