Winston - Salem, North Carolina
The highest rate of child hunger in the United States: A 5 point plan

STEP 1: BUDGET & FUNDING

Picture
Our budget proposal features a very simple, yet effective economic compromise: to rely on local commerce to voluntarily provide funds to run our fashion shows. We also plan to rely on a volunteer staff and have 90% of profits return into the local food bank. The group will also investigate the possibility of contacting local and state governments to inquire about tax-deductible pathways as a result of businesses participating in our events.

A.   Salaries & Wages – $0 (our organization is staffed   by volunteers)
B.    Equipment – $600
           -     Location renting cost (includes lighting, seating, carpeting, music, event space - for 6 hours) - $300*2 events = $600

C.    Travel – $0 (gas money at most)
D.   Materials & Supplies – $1,368

           -    180 Basic logo T – Shirts (S, M, L, XL) - $1,368
           -    Advertising – $0 (paper ads and boards, partnership with school district and community schools allow for daily event reminders).

E.    Other Direct Costs – $0
TOTAL: $1,968/$2,109.21

STEP 2: SOLICIT LOCAL BUSINESS

Picture
Our pilot program is located in the city with the highest rate of child hunger in the United States: Winston - Salem, North Carolina. First, the organization will solicit local businesses in cosmetics and makeup/hair to donate funds and volunteers for a fashion show. We will contact local schools, churches, and community recreational centers to secure a venue. If clothing models cannot be secured through the makeup and hair salons, we will inquire about the availability of volunteer models from the local schools and parishes. In exchange for donations, the salons will receive a complimentary booth to market and sell merchandise. Local businesses that cannot provide clothing or models, such as financial institutions and restaurants, can still contribute.

STEP 4: THE SHOW

The organization plans on holding a fall/winter event and a spring/summer event for our pilot. We hope the children enjoy the fashion show and have an amazing experience walking down the runway with our "models." For participating in the fashion shows, approximately 90% of donation fees will go to the local food bank, while the remaining 10% will be used for future budgeting purposes outlined below. We will also accept donations at the front door of the event from participants and any spectators or donors. In addition, 10% of all merchandise profits made by vendor booths will also be contributed to the pantry.

STEP 5: EVALUATION & SUSTAINABILITY

Picture
We plan on evaluating our non – for – profit after our first two events (fall/winter and spring/summer) based on the criteria we have established as: reducing the number of food – deficient citizens in Winston – Salem through a pre – to post – event comparison after 12 months.

After our initial one year funding plan, our non – for profit will re – evaluate its standing within the local community. We plan to continue soliciting donations from local businesses if boutiques and cosmetics shops are benefiting from our marketing and social media campaigns. Strutting for Starvation also will evaluate prospects for expansion into other hunger – stricken areas if local commerce is open to our entrance into the community. Additional partners would be eligible to join, however our dedication to an expense – free budget will be maintained to the highest standard of integrity. The group also plans to begin a viral video campaign on YouTube spreading awareness of child hunger. Our coordinators will review our effectiveness and we will value participant feedback for future developments.

The entire pilot program in Winston - Salem is heavily based around a simple economic cycle of "priming the pump" locally by encouraging local commerce through a core issue. While funds are used to address the issue, attention can be drawn to the donating businesses, stimulating their public relations standing. In turn, increased awareness for both business, the issue, and our organization will allow additional funds to continue to flow in, resulting in a term the organization deems, "the charity cycle."
